The Energy You Surround Yourself With Will Make You Or Break You

I want to get personal with you for a minute because I think the conversation we need to have about our industry starts in a different place than where most people are starting it.


The Challenge


For about eight years of my construction career, I jumped out of bed in the morning and could not wait to get to work. The jobsites felt alive, the team around me had a burning fire to win, and I was learning tons of new things every single day. Then somewhere along the way, the energy shifted. I spent close to another eight years where things just did not feel aligned anymore. I was still in the same industry, still doing the same kind of work, but the spark was gone. And when I really got honest with myself about why, it always came back to the same thing every single time. It was the energy around me.


Construction has always been a tough business, and it always will be. That part is not new. What is continuing to change is profits are getting tighter, competition is uglier than ever, schedules are more unrealistic by the month, and the pressure on every single person in the company has never been higher. When you put people in seats of responsibility without the right team around them, without the right structure underneath them, and without the right energy fueling the building, even the best pro’s in the country will eventually burn out. I felt it firsthand, and I know thousands of construction leaders are feeling it right now whether they say it out loud or not.


The Impact


Here is what I have come to believe after more than twenty years in this business. Based on all the statistics we have available on the internet, the companies that are going to win the next decade are not the ones with the biggest backlog or the fanciest tech stack or the deepest pockets. They are the ones who figured out the answer to a problem that is sitting in plain sight, and most contractors are walking right past it every single day.


Most companies I talk to have a wide open gap in the middle of their organization. They have one or two owners running everything, a couple of trusted veterans who have been there forever, and a layer underneath them that nobody is intentionally filling. When the top people have had enough, retire, or get poached, the whole company wobbles. The next layer down was never developed on purpose. They were promoted because they were loyal, because they were available, or because they were the only option in the room when the seat opened up. To me, hats a coin flip hoping it lands on the correct side. I wonder if many even understand what the correct side even looks like. 


When you do not have a real plan for the people you supervise, you are telling your best employees that they have no future inside your company. You are also telling them that the energy they feel every day is the energy they should expect for the rest of their career. And when hard working employees who fully and clearly understand their value feel stuck, they leave. Or worse, they stay and slowly drain the energy out of everyone else around them.


The Shift


The answer most contractors are looking for is already sitting right in front of them. It is not out in the labor market, it is not on a job board, and it is not at a recruiting event. It is the people they already have walking their sites and sitting in their trailers right now. The shift is in how you grow them on purpose instead of by accident.


Being intentional means identifying who has the raw material to grow, putting them through real structured experiences that stretch them, giving them assignments that test them, and surrounding them with the kind of energy that pulls them up instead of holding them down. It means creating the environment that I wish I had been in during those second eight years of my own career.


If you take even one step back and really sit with what I am telling you, you will set yourself up to attract the best people from every competitor in your market, because word travels fast in this industry. When you become the company where people actually grow, where the energy in the building lifts everyone up instead of grinding them down, you start having a waiting list NOT a hiring problem. That is the position every owner should be playing for.


The Closing


The truth is, the energy inside your company is either lifting your people or it is quietly killing them. There is no neutral.
