I Already Know What Is Wrong Before You Tell Me

The Challenge

I get on a call with an owner who wants an outside set of eyes on his business. He puts 1 or 2 people on that call to help gather information for the engagement. Within the first few minutes there is complete silence from both of them. Nobody speaks up, not a single word volunteered. And then after that call I start reaching out to those same people and nobody responds. When they finally do pick up the phone or answer an email the answer is always the same thing: I was still waiting on the owner to give me direction on this.

The Impact

When your team cannot take a single step without your permission you do not have employees anymore. You have extensions of yourself, and you are carrying every pound of that weight alone. Nobody speaks on the call because nobody speaks without you. Nobody responds to the email because nobody moves without your order. The owner is confused why nothing happens and the team is confused why they keep waiting and both sides are stuck in the same loop that nobody is talking about out loud. And I can tell you having spent 24 years in this industry running hundreds of millions in my own work and leading estimating on over 12 billion dollars in bids including a single 1.5 billion dollar project, I can pick up on exactly what is happening within a couple of conversations, sometimes a couple of minutes, sometimes within seconds.

The Shift

The transition from builder to CEO does not happen by accident. If you want to get to $50 MM, $100 MM, and $500 MM you better start learning how to navigate and delegate every responsibility inside that company. You need to get out of the weeds. You need to build confidence and there are very specific ways to do that through structure and rhythm inside your organization so that you have the touch points you need to get the right information without chasing it yourself. When you have that you stop managing every detail and you start rising your business to where it was always supposed to go.

The Closing

That is real freedom. Vacations where your phone stays in your pocket. A business that grows because of what you built not because of how many hours you put in. You did not start this company to be the only person in it who can make things move and right now the only thing standing between where you are and where you want to be is getting out of your own way and building the structure that lets your business rise without you holding it up every single day.

Hit reply and tell me this: if you disappeared for 2 weeks tomorrow what would be the very first thing to stop inside your company and why?
